African Premier League players, readers of New African Soccer and journalists have unanimously voted Nigeria’s Peter Odemwingie as the English Premier League’s African Player of the Season 2010/2011.
In a poll conducted by our website, reaching out to a staggering one million voters, Odemwingie, who plays for West Bromwich Albion FC polled highest over Ghana’s Sunderland player Asamoah Gyan who came second, and Manchester City’s Ivorian star Yaya Toure in third place.
Odemwingie, a Nigerian international scored 15 goals for the Baggies in his debut season in England. Interestingly, his target at the start of the season when he joined was to score 15 goals. His goals were instrumental to the comfortable retention of Premier League status for West Brom this season, and he has particularly blossomed under the tutelage of Roy Hodgson, the Baggies Manager.
Asamoah Gyan, Africa’s star of the last FIFA World Cup also dazzled the English Premier League playing for Sunderland this season, and he scored some important goals. His flair and colourful celebration made him an instant hit in households this season. Unfortunately his season was halted by a hamstring injury, which he is still nursing.
Yaya Toure joined Manchester City from FC Barcelona in August, and has been a pivotal feature in the resurgence of the richest club in the world, firing important goals and assists and guiding the Blues of Manchester to Champions League qualification. Toure’s goals, one each in the semi finals and the final of the FA Cup, guided City to their first cup triumph in 35 years.
Players like Chelsea’s Salomon Kalou and West Ham loanee Victor Obinna also scored quite high in the poll.
A ceremony that would bestow the award and recognition on the players will be hosted by New African Soccer at a date to be determined soon.
