..... are Ghana as they triumph dramatically on penalties 4-3 against Brazil in the Cairo International Stadium, Egypt. The Black Satellites overcame the odds and made history as their ten men shut out Brazil and then triumphed in a sudden death penalty shoot-out to become 2009 under 20 world champions.
It proved third time lucky for Ghana as they became the first African nation to win the biannual tournament. Their victory here eased the pain of two previous final appearances in ´93 and ´01, and repayed Brazil for the ´93 final in Australia when the South Americans snatched a last gasp goal to take the title. The final, which pitted the tournament´s two most prolific goal scoring teams against each other, failed to deliver goals but served up plenty of drama in front of a capacity crowd of 67 000. Ghana´s defence proved its doubters wrong. After Daniel Addo was controversially sent off in the 37th minute they produced a formidable defensive display to take the game to penalties. Both sides missed two of their first five penalties to take the tie to sudden death. Finally, Emmanuel Ayyenang Badu braved the tension and netted the decisive penalty to spark jubilant celebrations amongst the African spectators, back home in Ghana and across the globe. The victory crowned a fantastic tournament for the young team coached by Sellas Tetteh. Tetteh´s team finished the tournament deserved champions, undefeated and as leading scorers. Eight of their sixteen goals were scored by Dominic Adiyiah of Fredrikstad FK in the Norwegian Premier League. Adiyah´s prolific form secured him both the Golden Shoe and Golden Boot awards for the tournament´s top scorer and outstanding player. |
